A chicken en route by truck from Happy Chicken Poultry Farm to the butcher is freed by a bump in the road, falling off the vehicle and landing in the swamp. Where he meets characters like Mort the mud salamander, Randy and Rebecca Raccoon, Team Turtle (log basking champions), Suzy the marsh rabbit, Frog the frog, and Merle the alligator snapping turtle. After a humorous period of acclimation, he embarks on a treacherous journey to discover the mythical Great Blue Heron, evading an especially dangerous alligator along the way.
