Lip Synch Exercise

Kevin Neece, voice actor (and old friend), will be providing dialogue for upcoming animated shorts. As an exercise, I animated three raw clips that he improvised for his voice-acting demo. Each character is animated from a single sketch.  They’re colored, then divided up into parts in Illustrator and moved using the Flash animation tools.

The Vimeo upload appears to knock the audio slightly out of synch, though I can’t be sure it isn’t just the playback on my own machine.  Also available on Youtube.

Wow, I can’t even tell those are Kevin’s voices. Great job.

The animation has a very distinct look for the speaking. I like mouth movements. It adds a nice feel to the whole package.

Yeah, Kevin kind of disappears once you slap a drawing on his voice. He’s got the goods. I was going for a blend between the influence of Aardman and South Park with this practice run, just to see what I could do with the single character drawing (plus ten mouths and a few hands and arms interchanged). The next piece of animation, which I just scripted…Swamp Chicken…will have a few more heads, extra expressions and unique inbetween drawings in select shots. Better backgrounds, too.

How long did this take to do? How long are you planning for the Swamp Chicken project?

I worked on this for about four or five days. Swamp Chicken will take a few months. I’d like to wrap up the animation in three or less, but the process will be experimental, so there’s really no way to say for sure.
